A stuck plug valve can result from taper lock, dried sealant, deposits, corrosion or a drive fault. More torque can damage the stem, key or gearbox. Confirm where resistance starts, then use cleaner only when the valve and service permit it.

Do not treat every stuck plug as one fault
A handwheel or actuator stopping does not prove that the plug itself is seized. Gear teeth, keys, couplings, stem parts and travel stops can create the same symptom.
A position indicator may also be loose or wrongly set. Its reading is screening evidence, not proof of plug position.
Review the last known travel, torque trend and service history first. Check whether the valve stopped suddenly or became harder over several operations.

Common plug-valve causes
Common causes include taper lock, dried material and deposits. Corrosion, distorted parts, thermal effects and drive faults remain possible.
- Taper lock. A tapered plug can bind against the body when its lifting or lubricating system no longer works as intended.
- Dried sealant or lubricant. Old material may harden around the plug and passages. Organic sealants can harden in dry gas service.
- Process deposits. Scale, solids or heavy residue may obstruct the plug surface or injection passages.
- Corrosion or galling. Surface damage can raise friction and prevent movement. Cleaner cannot reverse lost metal or deep scoring.
- Drive-train faults. A failed gearbox, loose key, damaged stem or wrong stop can block or misreport travel.
External checks can narrow the list, but they may not identify the internal contact point. Planned isolation and inspection are valid endpoints when evidence remains mixed.
Use a safe diagnosis sequence
- Confirm operations permits testing and knows the valve's isolation role.
- Check the position indicator, stop settings and visible drive connections.
- Review prior torque, maintenance products and the time since full travel.
- Where the design allows, separate gearbox resistance from valve resistance under an approved procedure.
- Apply only the authorised test torque and observe the response. Stop on sudden movement, abnormal noise, stem twist, leakage or rising resistance.

Do not use extensions or impact tools to defeat a torque limit. A larger input hides the fault and increases stored energy.
Cleaner injection has firm limits
Check every gate before recommending cleaner. The valve must have suitable injection fittings in good condition. Its design, service and existing materials must suit injection.
OEM guidance applies, and operations must permit the work. The cleaners and lubricants overview explains product roles, but it does not replace a compatibility check.
Introduce a compatible cleaner in controlled amounts within all fitting and equipment ratings. Watch uptake and pressure response. Stop if pressure rises quickly, the fitting leaks, uptake remains blocked or the valve condition changes.
Cleaner may soften old material and free light deposits. It cannot correct a broken stem, failed lift mechanism, severe galling or distorted plug.
Industry practice sometimes allows cleaner to dwell before another controlled attempt. The time varies with the product, valve and site. Follow the product instructions rather than a fixed waiting rule.
Set acceptance before work starts
Agree what success means before treatment. Free movement must include controlled full travel, correct indication and an acceptable closure test where sealing matters.
Record input torque, movement, injected product, pressure response and final position. Easier movement alone does not prove the seat seals.
If the plug remains fixed or its pressure-boundary condition is uncertain, stop. A proper assessment, planned isolation and internal repair may be safer than another attempt. Our field services can support survey, treatment and documented retesting.
