A single high reading can reflect process conditions, measurement method or operator variation. Confirmation needs repeatable measurements under comparable conditions.

Common causes include valve and operator faults
Common causes include the mechanisms below. The list stays open because alignment, indication, process deposits and internal damage can produce similar resistance.
- Fouling or debris. Deposits can restrict the stem, closure element or seat area.
- Lubricant loss. Dry or neglected moving surfaces can develop higher friction during travel.
- Galling or wear. Damaged contact surfaces can increase resistance and worsen with movement.
- Dried existing product. Hardened material can restrict passages and moving parts, especially in dry-gas service.
- Gearbox or actuator resistance. Bearings, gears, alignment or actuator settings may raise measured input torque.
- Process condition change. Differential pressure, temperature or deposits may change the effort needed at that time.
- Travel or stop problem. Wrong stops or incomplete travel can create high effort near an expected endpoint.
Direction and position matter. Resistance near one end of travel suggests a different check from resistance across the whole stroke.
Use gearbox versus valve stiffness to separate operator and valve causes. An actuated valve also needs the actuator torque-trip checks.
Measure and log comparable evidence
There is no universal torque increase that diagnoses a fault. Valve design, size, service, position and operating conditions all affect the reading.
Use the approved tool and method for the site. Follow OEM limits and never exceed equipment or operating restrictions to obtain a reading.
- Record the valve identifier, type, size, service and normal position.
- Record direction of travel and the position where resistance changes.
- Note line conditions, differential pressure and relevant temperature changes.
- Identify the tool, connection point, operator and measurement method.
- Record peak and typical readings only where the method provides them safely.
- Note noise, vibration, incomplete travel, leakage or unusual pressure response.
- Compare with earlier readings taken under similar conditions.
Keep observations separate from conclusions. “Torque rose near closure” is evidence. “The seat is damaged” remains a hypothesis until confirmed.

Gate treatment and define stop-work conditions
Cleaner, lubricant or cycling may help selected valves, but treatment is not automatic. First confirm that injection fittings are in good condition. The design and service must suit injection. OEM guidance must support it. Operations must permit the work.
Where those gates pass, use controlled amounts within equipment and fitting ratings. Watch pressure response and stop for fast pressure rise, zero uptake, fitting leakage or changing conditions.
Controlled cycling may help distribute a suitable product where operations permit movement. Stop if torque rises, travel shortens, noise changes or the response becomes abnormal.
If the cause lies in the gearbox, actuator or stop setting, seat treatment will not correct it. Repair the confirmed fault rather than treating the nearest available injection point.

Close the loop with a new baseline
After approved work, repeat the same measurement under comparable conditions. Record travel, torque, leakage checks and any remaining restriction.
A lower reading shows changed resistance, not proven seat integrity. Confirm shut-off separately when the valve duty requires it.
Set the next review from criticality, service, history and OEM guidance. Industry practice includes cycling valves at least twice yearly, but this is not a universal rule.
