1. Why idle valves become difficult to move
A stationary valve is not protected from deterioration. Moisture, process deposits and old lubricant can change while its parts remain loaded in one position.
Common causes include corrosion around the stem, dried product, hardened sealant, tight packing and internal galling. A gearbox can also lose lubrication or corrode while the valve itself remains serviceable.
Position indication can add another false lead. A handwheel or actuator may move while a damaged coupling transfers little movement to the closure member.
Rising operating effort is screening evidence, not confirmation of internal seizure. Compare present behaviour with previous records under similar pressure and temperature conditions.
2. Separate the operating system before treatment
Start with the visible drive, mounting, coupling, stem and travel indication. Check for movement, damage, lost fasteners, corrosion and wrong stop settings.
Where the design and site procedure allow, a competent team can separate the gearbox or actuator. Testing each component independently shows where resistance sits without assuming the cause.
Do not apply extra force simply because the valve has been idle. Excess torque can damage gears, couplings, stems, keys or internal parts.
If the drive remains stiff when separated, service the drive against its OEM guidance. If the valve remains stiff, internal fouling, packing friction or damage becomes more likely.

3. Gates before cleaner, lubricant or cycling
Online treatment is not possible on every valve. The valve must have suitable injection fittings in good condition, and its design and service must suit injection.
OEM guidance must allow the proposed product and connection point. Operations must also permit injection and any movement needed during the work.
When every gate passes, use controlled amounts within equipment and fitting ratings. Watch pressure response, torque and travel, with stop-work conditions agreed before connection.
Cleaner can soften suitable residue, while lubricant can reduce friction on suitable surfaces. Neither can repair broken gears, bent stems, cracked parts or severe internal damage.
Cycling may distribute product and show whether movement improves. It must stay within approved limits and cannot substitute for a confirmed mechanical diagnosis.
4. Prevention needs an exercise programme and records
Industry practice often includes planned valve cycling to reduce seizure risk. The interval must follow OEM guidance, site criticality, service conditions and operating permission.
Record starting effort, full travel, seat performance and any abnormal sound during each exercise. A trend matters more than an isolated impression from one operator.
A risk-based study of upstream and midstream facilities, published by Valve World, placed seized valves at 28 percent of its fault population. Distributions vary between populations, so local records should control priorities.
Critical isolation valves deserve a clear escalation route when movement or closure cannot be confirmed. A proper assessment may lead to drive repair, valve overhaul or planned replacement.
