Pigging can carry rust, scale and process deposits towards mainline valves. Material caught near a seat can restrict travel or cause passing, but pressure rise and noise only suggest a problem until a controlled seat test confirms it.

Why pigging can change valve condition
A pig collects and moves material that had settled along the pipeline. That material may include rust, scale, sand, wax or other process deposits.
Most debris continues towards the receiving station. Some can enter valve seat pockets, body cavities or small clearances as flow conditions change.

Debris can affect movement and sealing
Loose material can affect a valve in several ways. The result depends on particle hardness, valve design, flow direction and the valve position during pig passage.
- Restricted travel. Material can collect where moving parts need clearance. The valve may then stop short or need more operating force.
- Seat obstruction. Debris can hold sealing surfaces apart after closure. Downstream pressure may then rise even when the indicator shows closed.
- Surface scoring. Hard particles can move across a seat under load. The resulting path may remain after loose material has cleared.
- Blocked injection routes. Dirt near a fitting or internal passage can prevent normal product uptake. Fast pressure rise then becomes a stop-work sign, not a reason for more force.

Use post-pig checks in a clear order
Start with records from before the pig run. Without a baseline, a newly noticed symptom may have existed earlier.
- Confirm the valve identity, normal position and pigging sequence.
- Inspect accessible fittings, drains, vents and operating equipment.
- Check permitted travel and compare operating response with previous records.
- Screen for passing through downstream pressure, flow and sound.
- Confirm suspected passing with a suitable seat test.
Pressure rise can come from trapped product heating or another passing valve. Flow indication can also reflect meter behaviour. These signs indicate where to investigate, but they do not prove seat damage.

Cleaning and cycling need four gates
Do not move directly from a symptom to injection. The valve must have injection fittings in good condition, and its design must suit the proposed work.
The process service must also suit the product. OEM guidance applies, and operations must permit cycling, testing and live injection.
Where those gates pass, cleaner may soften or move residue before retesting. Cycling can help distribute cleaner only within the approved operating range.
Use controlled amounts within equipment and fitting ratings. Stop if pressure rises quickly, uptake stops, a fitting leaks or valve response becomes worse.
Decide whether the problem cleared or remained
Retest under stated conditions after cleaning or permitted cycling. A better result suggests debris contributed, but the acceptance decision still comes from the test.
Continued leakage can indicate trapped material, scoring, incomplete travel or another fault. Do not assume that more cleaner or sealant will solve an unchanged response.
Severe or uncertain cases need proper assessment. Isolation and internal inspection may be required when travel remains restricted or seat damage is likely.

Post-pigging valve questions
Can pigging debris make a mainline valve pass?
Yes. Debris can hold seat faces apart or score them during movement. A controlled seat test is still needed to confirm passing and judge the result.
Does downstream pressure rise prove pigging damaged the seat?
No. Pressure rise is screening evidence. Heating, equalisation, another valve or instrument behaviour can produce a similar sign, so the seat needs a confirming test.
Should a stiff valve be forced after a pig run?
No. Increased force can damage operating parts or drive hard debris across sealing surfaces. Check position, equipment and permitted travel before further operation.
When is cleaner injection suitable after pigging?
Only when fittings are sound, the valve design and service suit injection, OEM guidance allows it and operations permit the work. Use controlled amounts and stop on abnormal pressure response.
