- Verify bypasses, vents and connected branches are in their required states.

Downstream pressure rise, flow and acoustic response are screening evidence. Heating and pressure equalisation can mislead. Use the approved seat or isolation test as confirmation.

Build an open cause list
Common causes include debris, seat damage and incomplete closure. Drive faults, wrong stops, dried material and test-system errors can also matter.
- Debris across the seat. Scale, sand or process residue can hold a small leak path open.
- Seat or closure damage. Scoring, galling, soft-part damage or broken trim may prevent tight shut-off.
- Incomplete travel. A stop, gearbox, stem, key or actuator setting may prevent full closure.
- Fouled service system. Dried or incompatible material can block passages and raise operating torque.
- False indication. Position feedback, pressure instruments or the test line-up may not represent actual seat leakage.
A pressure test can confirm leakage but may not identify the damaged surface. Internal inspection remains the firm endpoint when the cause affects repair choice.
Select remediation through explicit gates
Correct test and travel faults before treating the seats. Controlled cycling may move loose debris when operations permit movement and process conditions are safe.
Before cleaner or sealant injection, check four gates. Injection fittings must be suitable and in good condition. The valve design and service must suit injection.
OEM guidance applies, and operations must permit the work. Use compatible material in controlled amounts within all equipment and fitting ratings.
Watch uptake, pressure response and valve condition. Stop on rapid pressure rise, fitting leakage, no uptake, higher torque or unexpected process movement.
Cleaner may address residue. Sealant may restore a temporary seal across limited seat damage in suitable valves. Neither repairs broken parts, severe damage or an uncertain pressure boundary.
Use field services for survey, controlled treatment and documented testing. Choose planned isolation, internal repair or replacement when online work lacks a safe or credible route.
Retest, restrict and record
Repeat the approved closure test after corrective work. Keep the method and acceptance basis consistent unless the responsible authority approves a change.

A smaller leak indication is not a pass unless it meets the agreed acceptance basis. A valve can move fully and still pass across its seat.
