Storage is part of the valve service life
A spare valve may wait months or years before installation. During that time, it can collect moisture, dust and handling damage without carrying process pressure.
Factory acceptance does not freeze the valve's condition. The installation team needs evidence that storage controls remained effective.

Protect openings, surfaces and operating parts
The basic aim is simple: keep contaminants out and protective materials in. The method must suit the valve type, trim, seals and storage climate.
- Close every opening. Keep flange covers, thread plugs and protective caps secure. Replace damaged covers without exposing the bore longer than needed.
- Keep the valve dry. Store away from standing water, roof leaks and wet ground. Control condensation where temperatures change.
- Support it correctly. Use stable supports that do not load handwheels, actuators, stems or small fittings.
- Protect machined faces. Keep flange faces, seal areas and exposed stems clean and protected with approved materials.
- Preserve accessories. Protect actuators, limit switches, tubing, drains, vents and injection fittings from impact and contamination.
General-purpose grease is not automatically suitable for seats, seals or stem areas. Product compatibility must follow the valve and material requirements.
Inspection should follow the storage risk
Storage checks need a planned schedule rather than a forgotten warehouse row. Frequency depends on climate, packaging, access and the consequence of valve failure.
Inspect covers, supports, corrosion protection, identification and visible moisture. Record any moved valve, broken wrapping or missing cap.
Operate the valve only as OEM instructions and storage procedures allow. Some designs need a stated position or special support during storage. Unplanned cycling can disturb protective coatings or damage dry sealing surfaces.

Records prevent uncertainty at installation
Each stored valve should remain traceable to its identity and documentation. A useful record follows the asset even when it changes location.
- Record valve tag, manufacturer, type, size and pressure class.
- Record arrival condition and any transport damage.
- List protective materials, covers and storage position.
- Log inspections, movement, operation and corrective work.
- Keep required certificates and test records linked to the valve.
Do not replace missing evidence with assumptions. A valve of unknown history needs a new condition baseline before installation.
Use a pre-install acceptance gate
Remove preservation only when installation is ready. Early opening creates another period when clean surfaces can collect site debris.
- Match the valve identity and orientation with the installation requirement.
- Inspect the bore, ends, flange faces, stem and accessible fittings.
- Check for water, dirt, corrosion, coating damage and foreign material.
- Confirm permitted travel and actuator or gearbox response.
- Complete any required pressure or seat tests under the project procedure.
- Record acceptance, remaining limits and any corrective work.
Movement shows operation, not seat integrity. A seat test provides the required leakage evidence under stated conditions.

Stored valve preservation questions
Why can an unused stored valve fail at installation?
Moisture, dirt, corrosion, poor support or handling damage can change its condition after factory acceptance. Long storage also creates gaps when inspections are not recorded.
Should stored valves be cycled regularly?
Only when OEM instructions and the storage procedure allow it. The correct position and operation need to suit the valve design, seals and preservation method.
Can general-purpose grease protect every stored valve?
No. Grease can be incompatible with seats, seals, process service or later products. Use only approved preservation materials for the valve and storage conditions.
What must be checked before a stored valve is installed?
Confirm identity, orientation, bore cleanliness, sealing surfaces, fittings, permitted travel and required test status. Record defects and hold any valve with unresolved damage.
