Valve-sealant storage and field acceptance: shelf life, contamination and heat exposure

Protect product identity and condition from receipt to field issue.

The short answer

Accept stored valve sealant only when the container seal, label, shelf-life status and storage history remain satisfactory. Heat, contamination, moisture or poor records can make otherwise identified stock uncertain. Quarantine doubtful material rather than deciding from appearance alone.

1. Shelf life is only one acceptance check

A date on the label matters, but it does not describe every storage event. Product condition also depends on packaging, contamination control and exposure history.

Stock within its stated shelf life can still become uncertain after poor handling. Older stock may also require a documented manufacturer decision rather than automatic rejection or use.

Do not invent a common shelf-life period. Follow the stated product information and your approved stock procedure.

2. Control heat, moisture and contamination

Storage should protect containers from damaging heat, water entry and uncontrolled opening. The exact limits must come from the product information.

  1. Keep containers in the approved storage area.
  2. Protect labels and closures from water, dirt and physical damage.
  3. Avoid prolonged exposure near hot equipment or direct sun.
  4. Use clean tools and fittings when a container is opened.
  5. Close partly used containers through the approved method.

Heat can change product condition before it reaches a valve. Cold storage may also affect handling. Neither effect can be judged reliably by touching the container.

3. Check identity at receipt

Receiving control protects both quality and provenance. A product should enter stock with enough information to trace what arrived and where it came from.

  1. Check that packaging is sealed and undamaged.
  2. Confirm the product identity matches the purchase record.
  3. Record the batch or lot reference shown on the package.
  4. Check the shelf-life information and receipt date.
  5. Retain the supplier and delivery record through the approved system.

Missing, altered or unreadable information makes the stock uncertain. It should move to quarantine, not directly into field kits.

4. Repeat acceptance before field issue

Receipt checks do not cover later storage damage. Review the container again before it leaves the store and before connection in the field.

  1. Confirm the label remains readable and matches the job plan.
  2. Check the closure, container and seal for damage or leakage.
  3. Confirm shelf-life status against the issue date.
  4. Review any recorded heat, water or contamination event.
  5. Check that the planned product still suits the valve and service.

Appearance can reveal obvious contamination or separation. It cannot prove chemical compatibility, purity or correct identity.

Do not blend doubtful remnants to avoid waste. Mixing can create an unknown material and remove traceability from the job record.

5. Quarantine uncertain stock

Quarantine is a control, not a verdict that the product is counterfeit or unusable. It separates uncertain stock until an authorised decision is recorded.

Reasons include broken seals, damaged labels, unknown exposure, missing batch information or suspected contamination. The review may end in release, return or disposal under site rules.

Do not test uncertain material by injecting a small amount into a live valve. The valve is not a product test rig, and removal may be difficult.

6. Link stock records to the valve job

The field record should show which identified batch entered each valve. This supports later diagnosis if product behaviour or valve condition changes.

Product acceptance does not permit injection by itself. Sound fittings, suitable valve design and service, OEM guidance and operations approval remain required.

When injection is permitted, use controlled amounts within every connected rating. Confirm the result through the chosen valve test, not product uptake alone.

Can valve sealant be accepted from the date alone?

No. Check the stated shelf-life status together with packaging, label, seal, storage history and contamination control. A date cannot show every handling event.

What should happen to a damaged sealant container?

Move it to quarantine and record the reason. An authorised review should decide whether to release, return or dispose of the stock under site rules.

Can appearance prove stored sealant is suitable?

No. Appearance may reveal obvious damage or contamination, but it cannot prove identity, chemical compatibility or service suitability. Use records and written product evidence.

Should leftover sealant be combined into one container?

Not without an approved process and evidence that identity and compatibility remain controlled. Combining remnants can create an unknown mixture and break batch traceability.
