Record the service that reaches each valve
Upstream valves can see changing gas, liquid and solids as production conditions change. A valve record should describe current service, not only the original design basis.
Sand and debris can collect near sealing surfaces or mark seats during movement. Heat and pressure changes can also alter operating behaviour. These conditions justify inspection, but they do not prove a specific fault.

Rank valves by the consequence of unavailable isolation
Wellhead and gathering valves perform different duties. Some control a single flow path, while others define a wider station or gathering boundary.
Criticality should consider the isolation function, service, access, operating method, fault history and strength of existing evidence. It should direct attention without removing any valve from the programme.
- Identify what the valve must isolate and what alternative isolation exists.
- Record access limits, operating method and the people needed for testing.
- Review sand, debris, heat and prior intervention history.
- Raise priority where travel, sealing or evidence quality has weakened.
Separate hard operation from seat passing
High operating effort may suggest fouling, dry seals, actuator problems or mechanical damage. It does not show that the seat is leaking.
Likewise, downstream pressure movement, flow indication and sound suggest possible passing. They remain screening evidence. Confirm seat condition with an approved test under a known arrangement.

Plan field work around access and operating state
Remote or dispersed assets need a complete work pack before the field visit. Missing fittings, wrong adapters or unclear test boundaries can waste the available operating window.
- Confirm valve identity, service, line state and approved test method.
- Check access, communications, tools and verified equipment ratings.
- Observe external condition before moving or connecting to the valve.
- Record travel, stop position, pressure response and seat-test result.
- Leave a clear status and next action for the operating team.

Gate any in-place treatment
Treating an installed valve can avoid immediate removal in suitable cases. It is not available for every design, fitting condition or upstream service.
Before recommending cleaner, lubricant or sealant, confirm that fittings are in good condition. Valve design and service must suit injection, OEM guidance must allow it, and operations must permit the work.
Use controlled amounts within equipment and fitting ratings while watching pressure response. Stop on unexpected response, no uptake or an approaching approved limit. Retest the original fault afterwards.
