Avoiding counterfeit valve products

Use traceable supply and receiving evidence, not appearance or price.

The short answer

Avoid counterfeit or unknown-origin valve products through approved supply routes, sealed packaging and traceable batch records. Confirm identity again at receipt and field issue. Missing provenance does not prove fraud, but it creates enough uncertainty to quarantine the product before use.

1. Define the problem without making accusations

A counterfeit product falsely presents another identity. An unknown-origin product lacks enough evidence to confirm what it is or where it came from.

Those categories are not the same. Missing paperwork may reflect poor control rather than deliberate fraud. Field teams should record the gap, quarantine the item and seek evidence.

Do not identify a supplier or seller as dishonest without verified facts. Provenance control works through records and acceptance gates, not suspicion alone.

2. Why provenance matters inside a valve

A package label cannot prove the contents will suit the maintenance role. Unknown material can affect seats, elastomers, existing product and injection passages.

The risk is not limited to immediate leakage. Unsuitable material may restrict movement, wash from the seat or make later maintenance harder to assess.

A successful connection or normal pressure response does not prove product identity. It only shows part of the delivery behaviour.

Compatibility must be assessed separately. Read sealant compatibility across media and materials before any product enters the valve.

3. Build a controlled supply chain

Purchasing controls should make the product path traceable from order to field issue. The exact approval system depends on the operator.

  1. Buy through an approved and recorded supply route.
  2. Match the ordered product identity to the delivery documents.
  3. Retain supplier, delivery and receiving records.
  4. Record batch or lot information from the sealed package.
  5. Keep any supporting product information with the stock record.

A low price or unfamiliar source can justify more checking, but neither proves a counterfeit. The decision should rest on identity and traceability evidence.

Approved supply status also needs review over time. A familiar name does not remove the need for receiving checks on each delivery.

4. Inspect sealed packaging at receipt

Packaging checks help identify tampering, substitution and poor handling. They cannot confirm formulation or performance by themselves.

  1. Check that seals and closures are intact.
  2. Check that labels are readable and internally consistent.
  3. Match product and batch details to the delivery record.
  4. Record damage, leakage, over-labelling or missing information.
  5. Quarantine any package that fails the approved receipt check.

Do not open a doubtful package merely to compare colour or smell. Such checks are weak evidence and may remove the original seal condition.

5. Confirm identity again before use

Field issue is a second acceptance point. Confirm that the selected package matches the job plan and remains traceable.

  1. Read the label and batch information again.
  2. Check the container and closure for later damage.
  3. Confirm shelf-life status and recorded storage conditions.
  4. Link the issued batch to the valve service record.
  5. Return doubtful material to quarantine before connecting equipment.

Do not combine remnants from different or uncertain containers. That action removes clear identity and can create an unassessed mixture.

6. Product acceptance does not approve injection

Verified provenance answers where the product came from. It does not prove that the product suits a particular valve or fault.

Before injection, confirm sound identified fittings, suitable valve design and service, OEM guidance and operations permission. Then use controlled amounts within all connected ratings.
