A retrofit changes the pressure boundary
An injection fitting is not a general accessory. It becomes part of the system that contains live process pressure.
Adding one can affect body strength, local stress, sealing and future inspection. The consequence of failure may include an uncontrolled release. That is why an installed-valve retrofit needs engineering ownership, not field improvisation.
This article stays at assessment level. It does not provide drilling, tapping or connection procedures. Those activities require specialist design, approved methods and trained personnel.
Feasibility is valve-specific
A similar valve may have a factory connection, yet an installed retrofit can still be unsuitable. Casting shape, wall condition and internal clearances may differ.
The assessment should cover these factors:
- Verified identity. Confirm manufacturer, model, size, pressure class, materials and serial records where available.
- Approved design data. Check drawings, pressure-boundary details and any original provision for injection.
- Present condition. Review corrosion, erosion, previous repairs, wall loss, cracking concerns and access limits.
- Service duty. Consider pressure, temperature, fluid hazards, deposits and compatibility with the proposed fitting system.
- Connection purpose. Define the intended injection path and what the retrofit is expected to achieve.
- Life-cycle control. Plan inspection, protection, records and future maintenance for the added pressure-boundary item.
Start by reading the valve nameplate. Missing identification makes a design decision harder, not easier.
Approval must come before site work
The valve owner must control the change through its engineering and management-of-change process. OEM review should be sought where records and support remain available.
The approved package should define design responsibility, applicable site rules and independent checks. It should also state operating limits, inspection needs and stop-work conditions.
A permit alone does not approve a new pressure-boundary connection. The permit controls work execution after engineering has accepted the design. Both gates are necessary.
A good valve survey report separates observed facts from retrofit opinions. It also records every missing input that blocks a decision.
Clear prohibitions protect the line
Do not create a connection from a generic sketch or another valve's dimensions. Do not rely on surface appearance as proof of wall condition.
Do not treat a temporary leak response as design validation. Do not bypass the OEM, owner or authorised engineering review because access is difficult.
Do not start injection after a retrofit until the complete fitting and valve arrangement is accepted. The valve design and service must suit injection, fittings must be in good condition, OEM guidance applies, and operations must permit the work.

When replacement is the better decision
Replacement should remain a live option throughout assessment. It often wins when design evidence is missing, pressure-boundary condition is doubtful, or access prevents reliable verification.
It may also be preferred when the valve has wider defects. A new fitting cannot repair damaged seats, a weak body or an unsuitable valve design.

Is a work permit enough approval for a retrofit?
No. A permit controls work execution. The pressure-boundary change also needs approved engineering, change control and valve-specific design evidence before site work starts.
Can a factory fitting on a similar valve justify the change?
No. Similar appearance does not prove equal casting shape, wall condition or internal clearance. The assessment must use evidence for the exact installed valve.
When should replacement be preferred?
Prefer replacement when design evidence is missing, boundary condition is doubtful, verification is weak, or the valve has defects that a fitting cannot correct.
