A valve nameplate provides the first identity check before maintenance. Record the manufacturer, model or serial reference, size, pressure rating, materials and marked standards. Then compare those details with drawings, service records and the actual installed valve.

Record the plate before interpreting it
Take clear photographs of the full plate and its position on the valve. Keep one wider image showing the body, actuator and connected line.
Transcribe each field exactly as marked. Do not expand an unclear abbreviation from memory or copy missing data from a nearby valve.
The plate is an identity source, not a full maintenance instruction. It must be checked against approved drawings, asset records and present service conditions. Our unknown-history baseline explains how to rebuild records carefully.
Fields that shape maintenance planning
- Manufacturer and model. These details help locate drawings, manuals and recognised spare arrangements.
- Serial or asset reference. A unique reference joins the valve to inspection, test and repair history.
- Nominal size. Size supports equipment planning, access review and product quantity estimates.
- Pressure rating. The marked class or rating helps define the pressure boundary. Current process conditions still need separate confirmation.
- Body and trim materials. Material marks guide compatibility checks for service fluid, cleaner, lubricant and sealant.
- Marked standard. A manufacturing or test standard identifies the original framework. It does not prove the valve's present condition.
- Temperature or service marks. Record any marked limits or special service designation exactly.
Actuated valves may have separate actuator and accessory plates. Record them independently. Do not treat an actuator serial number as the valve body identity.
Match identity to products and equipment
Nameplate data narrows the maintenance plan, but it does not select an injection product alone. Seat design, seals, service fluid and previous materials also matter.
Before injection, confirm that fittings are in good condition, valve design and service suit injection, OEM guidance applies, and operations permit the work. Then check the selected cleaner, lubricant or sealant against material and service evidence.

Resolve conflicts instead of choosing a label
A nameplate can conflict with drawings or the asset register. The body may also show cast markings that describe material or pattern differently.
Record every conflict and stop decisions that depend on the disputed field. Check purchase records, inspection history, dimensional evidence and OEM support where available.
Paint, replacement actuators and previous repairs can also confuse identity. A neat plate does not prove that every connected component remains original.
Use evidence strength in the report. Mark a direct plate reading as observed, a drawing match as verified, and an assumed model as unconfirmed.
When the plate is missing or unreadable
Do not create a full identity from valve appearance. Similar bodies can contain different seats, trims, pressure classes or injection passages.
- Photograph body marks, end connections, bonnet, stem, actuator and fittings.
- Record measured dimensions only where site rules permit safe access.
- Trace the line number and asset tag into controlled drawings and records.
- Compare maintenance history, purchase files and previous survey photographs.
- List every fact that remains unknown and how it affects the planned work.
A structured valve survey can build this evidence. If identity still remains uncertain, select a conservative inspection or replacement route rather than forcing a maintenance decision.
Valve nameplate identification questions
Is the pressure class the same as current line pressure?
No. The marked class describes the valve rating framework. Operations must separately confirm the current pressure, temperature and service conditions for the planned work.
Can a valve be identified from its body shape?
Not reliably. Similar bodies can contain different trims, seats, ratings and passages. Use markings, controlled records, dimensions and OEM evidence together.
What if the nameplate conflicts with the asset register?
Record the conflict and stop decisions that depend on it. Check drawings, purchase files, inspection history and direct valve evidence before assigning an identity.
Does the nameplate select the right sealant?
No. It supplies important identity and material data. Product selection also needs seat design, seal materials, service fluid, previous products and OEM guidance.
