A valve with no service history needs a baseline built from verified identity, process duty, external condition, operating evidence and suitable tests. Approach the first service cautiously because old products, blocked fittings and hidden damage remain unknown.

Missing history is an evidence gap
No record of failure does not mean the valve has performed well. It may mean earlier work, faults or tests were never captured.
Start by separating facts, observations and assumptions. This prevents an old label or verbal account becoming accepted engineering history.
The goal is a usable starting point for decisions. It is not a claim that every hidden condition has been found.
Reconstruct identity and operating duty
Survey the installed valve before planning maintenance. Record what can be read directly, then trace supporting documents through site systems.
- Identity. Capture maker, type, size, pressure class, serial marks, actuator and accessible fitting details.
- Location. Mark line, station, chamber, access limits and nearby isolation points.
- Duty. Confirm medium, pressure, temperature range, normal position and isolation role with the process owner.
- History sources. Search drawings, work permits, stores issues, operator logs, photographs and matching asset records.
- Confidence. Label each field as verified, observed, reported or unknown.

Inspect condition before the first movement
Do not begin by forcing the handwheel or commanding a full stroke. Unknown damage, trapped pressure or actuator faults can worsen during uncontrolled movement.
Inspect supports, body joints, stem area, gearbox, actuator mounting, cables, tubing, coatings and accessible fittings. Look for leakage signs, corrosion, missing caps and past modification.
Confirm the intended travel direction and local operating procedure. Check that movement will not upset the process or defeat required isolation.

Treat the first service as controlled investigation
Plan the first movement with operations, defined limits and clear stop conditions. Record starting position, applied input, travel response and final position.
Rising torque, irregular movement or actuator trips indicate a problem needing assessment. They do not confirm whether the fault sits in the valve, gearbox or actuator.
Do not inject cleaner, lubricant or sealant merely because fittings are present. Their purpose, condition, passage state and old contents may be unknown.
Injection requires several gates. Fittings must be in good condition, valve design and service must suit injection, OEM guidance applies, and operations must permit the work.
Follow the pre-injection checklist if those gates are being reviewed. Stop if identity, rating, compatibility or pressure response is unclear.
Build separate evidence for travel and sealing
Position indication can show commanded or measured travel. It does not prove that the seat provides tight shut-off.
Downstream pressure rise, sound and flow indication may suggest passing. Confirm the finding through a suitable field seat test under an agreed procedure.
Record the test arrangement, process condition, instruments, observations and acceptance basis. Without that context, a later “passed” entry has little value.
Use full travel does not prove tight shut-off and field seat-leak testing to select evidence.
Start the permanent record on day one
The baseline becomes useful only when later work can be compared against it. Keep photographs, readings and decisions under one stable valve identity.
- Record who observed or performed each activity.
- Record date, process state and test method.
- Separate screening symptoms from confirmed findings.
- List products, quantities and equipment only when actually used.
- Capture stop conditions, unresolved gaps and next actions.
- Review the baseline after the first planned maintenance cycle.

No. It means the available record cannot prove what happened. Treat earlier maintenance, products, tests and faults as unknown until supported by reliable evidence.
Should an unknown-history valve be cycled during the survey?
Only under an approved operating plan after identity, process impact and external condition are checked. Use defined limits and stop conditions during the first movement.
Can existing injection fittings be used immediately?
No. First verify their purpose, condition, rating and passage state. The valve design and service must suit injection, and operations must permit the work.
